The Gates of Heaven

There once was a general who ask the zen master Hakuin " Are there really such things as heaven and hell? "

" What do you do for a living?" asked the Zen master

" I'm a general.." he answered

" Ha Ha Ha what idiot asked you to be his general? you look more like a pig farmer to me." the master stated

" WHAT!!" cried the general, So angered by this the man ripped out his sword ready to kill the zen master. " I'll cut you to peaces!"

" Here lie the gates of hell! " the master replied

The general's eyes opened to the truth at that moment

" Excuse me, please forgive my insolence." the general said bowing deeply.

" Here lie the gates of heaven" the monk said bowing back.
